Self-care during your period - do yourself a favor
By SELENACARE Redaktion · 16 June 2023

Menstruation is a natural process that takes place in the female body — and yet it is a recurring challenge for many women. During their period, many women suffer from physical symptoms such as cramps, pain, bloating or heightened sensitivity. This phase can be very draining, and most women would do anything to make these days more pleasant.
To keep discomfort during your period to a minimum, self-care is essential. Self-care means taking time and paying attention to your own body, and looking after it especially well during this time.
Why is self-care important during your period?
During your period, the female body goes through enormous changes, both physically and emotionally. Because human anatomy is different for every woman, most also react differently to this stressful situation in the body. Some women experience no symptoms at all, while others feel very unwell during this time.
During this time it is especially important to look after yourself, to care for yourself and to cherish the sensitive areas of your body. Practising self-care during your period gives you the opportunity to love yourself and to look after yourself when you need it most. This helps to ease both the physical and the emotional symptoms of your period.
Individual needs: what is best for me during my period?
Every woman has different needs when it comes to looking after herself during her period. Some women prefer to keep movement and physical activity to a minimum in order to conserve their energy. Others, however, prefer yoga or a walk in the fresh air to relax.
Should I change my beauty routine during my period?
It is well known that hormone fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can affect our skin. During your period, it can therefore make sense to make a few adjustments to your beauty routine to prevent or minimise spots and other blemishes.
One option is to use gentler cleansers so as not to irritate the skin further. Another tip could be to deliberately choose products for oily, blemish-prone skin to fight spots more effectively.
Another important aspect is providing enough moisture. Especially in the run-up to your period and during it, our skin can lose more moisture and dry out. So make sure you use moisturising skincare, and perhaps opt for products containing hyaluronic acid.
Observe your skin and pay attention to its needs so you can make targeted adjustments to your beauty routine. You can also find more information on this topic in our guide article "Your cycle and spots".
8 tips: what can I do as self-care?
1. Watch your diet: a nutritious, balanced diet can help reduce cramps and tummy aches. Try to eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, wholegrain products, lean protein and healthy fats.
Avoid heavily processed foods and go for fresh, healthy meals instead. Foods containing magnesium and calcium in particular can help reduce cramps and tummy aches.
2. Drink enough water: make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. This can help reduce bloating.
3. Use warmth: warmth can help ease cramps and pain during your period. Place a hot water bottle or heat pad on your lower tummy, for example, and enjoy the soothing effect of the warmth on your body. A warm bath or shower can work wonders too.
4. Opt for gentle exercise: although moving can sometimes feel like a struggle during your period, light physical activity can help reduce cramps. Try a walk in the fresh air, for example, or yoga exercises designed specifically for women during menstruation.
5. Treat yourself to some relaxation: relaxation techniques such as meditation or breathing exercises can relieve stress and reduce pain. A relaxing bubble bath can also help you unwind and recharge.
6. Get enough sleep: during this time, make sure you get enough sleep to support your body as it regenerates. Wind down before bed with a calm activity such as reading. By taking good care of yourself, you will be back on form sooner!
7. Avoid stressful situations: try to avoid stressful situations during your period. Time pressure, stress and other demanding events can lead to additional physical and emotional strain.
8. Listen to your body: every woman has her own individual needs when it comes to looking after herself during her period. Trust your intuition and listen to your own body.
If the pain does not subside despite all these measures, or even gets worse, it is advisable to see a doctor. They can carry out further examinations if necessary to clarify possible causes.
All in all: every person who menstruates experiences this time differently and has individual needs. What matters is that you know yourself well and find out what works best for you to make your period as comfortable as possible.
Why self-care matters — not just during your period
All things considered, there are many reasons why self-care is important during your period and beyond. When we look after our body and mind, we boost our wellbeing — and with it our productivity, our happiness and our overall quality of life.
By paying attention to our needs, we can also improve our relationships with others, because we understand ourselves and our needs better and can respond to them better. Finally, we should remember that self-care is not a selfish act, but a necessity for living a fulfilled life.
So take the time to look after yourself — whether during your period or at any other time of the month — and give your body and mind the love and care they deserve.
