What is cervical mucus and what color should the discharge be?
What is cervical mucus?
What we colloquially call discharge is usually cervical mucus. Cervical mucus is a secretion produced in the cervix that performs important tasks for fertility and the immune system.
Cervical mucus consists of over 90% water. It smells slightly acidic but is otherwise odourless. Another important characteristic of cervical mucus: its consistency changes over the course of the cycle. That's why there are phases in your cycle when you can see more discharge, and phases when you have less or even no visible cervical mucus.
Is cervical mucus the same as discharge?
Cervical mucus is a type of discharge whose consistency changes with the hormonal shifts of your cycle. Unlike other discharge, cervical mucus is odourless and a sign of good health. Besides cervical mucus, vaginal secretions can also mix into your discharge. It is often not easy to distinguish this healthy discharge from abnormal discharge.
The biggest differences are that abnormal discharge does not change over the cycle, frequently smells unpleasant and is often accompanied by itching or burning. In addition, abnormal discharge usually has a different colour and consistency than healthy cervical mucus.
Which colour of discharge is normal?
Cervical mucus can be transparent, glassy, clear, like raw egg white, whitish, creamy, sticky, slimy, stretchy, reddish, brownish, transparent with streaks, cloudy, watery, or even yellow. All these colours and consistencies of cervical mucus are normal and healthy.
If the discharge is rather foamy, greyish or greenish, this is a sign of an infection. This type of discharge is usually accompanied by an unpleasant smell and itching or burning. In this case, you should see a doctor.
Why do we have discharge?
Cervical mucus performs three important tasks:
1) Preventing bacteria, pathogens and sperm from entering the uterus (blocking)
2) Filtering out functionally inferior sperm (filtering)
3) Supporting sperm on their way into the uterus (transport / nourishment)
Cervical mucus takes on the first task – blocking – on non-fertile days. On those days, biologically speaking, there is no need for anything to enter the uterus. The cervical mucus forms a kind of plug in front of the cervix and seals it off. During this time, cervical mucus is considered part of the immune system.
The second and third tasks are performed by the cervical mucus during the fertile window of the cycle. On fertile days, the plug in front of the cervix dissolves. The environment of the vagina is very acidic in order to kill off bacteria and pathogens. In this acidic environment, sperm can only survive for 30 minutes to 2 hours. During the fertile phase, cervical mucus therefore becomes more fluid. This more fluid cervical mucus lines the walls of the vagina from the inside, neutralising the environment for the sperm.
This type of cervical mucus also provides the sperm with enough fluid to stay mobile and capable of fertilisation. Thanks to the glucose in the cervical mucus, sperm can survive in this type of mucus for up to 5 days in the uterus, still capable of fertilisation, waiting for ovulation.

How does cervical mucus change over the course of your cycle?
Because cervical mucus performs different tasks throughout the cycle, its appearance changes over the cycle too. On non-fertile days after your period, cervical mucus is not visible and your vulva feels normal to dry. During this time, it forms a plug in front of the cervix.
As oestrogen rises before ovulation, the plug dissolves. Cervical mucus becomes visible and your vulva starts to feel moist. How your cervical mucus changes over your cycle is very individual, but around ovulation many women tend to have very fluid, often transparent cervical mucus. It is often stretchy during this time, sometimes looking like raw egg white. A very wet feeling, or a feeling as if you were "leaking", is also characteristic of this phase of the cycle and of high oestrogen levels.

If you tend to have brownish discharge before your period, this is what's known as spotting. It is generally nothing to worry about, but it does point to an insufficient progesterone level.
