Even if your period is light and you use comparatively few disposable products during it, switching to a menstrual cup is still worth it. Read on to find out what benefits a menstrual cup offers when your flow is light.
Can your period sometimes be lighter?
Your cycle changes over the course of your life. On average, a menstruating person has their period 500 times. Cycle irregularities can happen now and then – that alone is no cause for concern. However, if your period stays noticeably lighter than usual over several cycles, you should get checked by a doctor. A light menstrual flow can occur just as easily as a heavier one.
There are various reasons why the heaviness of your period can change. Stress, for example, or weakened ovarian function due to poor nutrition. An oestrogen deficiency or gynaecological conditions can also be the cause. The latter should always be checked by a doctor. People with a light menstrual flow often find tampons uncomfortable. If not enough blood collects in the tampon, removing it can be painful. Once again, a menstrual cup is a great alternative here.

What if your period doesn't arrive properly?
Missing your period, also known as amenorrhoea, can have various causes. On the one hand, completely natural ones such as pregnancy or menopause; on the other, stress or illness can also be the reason. What does the heaviness of your period say about you?
Some people need to change their tampon or pad every few hours during their period, while for others it's all over after just a few days. The heaviness of a period varies from person to person. By the way, how heavy your period is says nothing about your fertility or your ability to get pregnant. As long as you ovulate regularly, the heaviness of your monthly bleed is of secondary importance.
That said, your lifestyle does influence your fertility, and this in turn can affect how heavy your period is. With significant excess weight, for example, a lot of fat is stored in the tissue, which can affect your hormone balance and the heaviness of your period. Severely overweight menstruating people often have irregular or very light periods.
Heavy period flow
If you lose around 80 millilitres of blood during your cycle, you're one of those with a heavy period. Young menstruating people and those shortly before menopause are particularly affected. The reason for this is hormonal. However, cysts, endometriosis, inflammation, blood clotting disorders or conditions of the heart, kidneys, liver or thyroid can also be responsible for heavy bleeding.
Normal period flow
If you lose between 40 and 50 millilitres of blood during your cycle, you're absolutely within the normal range.
Light period flow
If you lose around 25 millilitres of blood or less during your cycle, you have a light period. A nutrient deficiency could be the reason. Those who take the pill also tend to have a lighter period. Pregnancy could be another reason for light bleeding. It's best to get checked by your doctor.
Is a menstrual cup worth it for light bleeding?
People with a light menstrual flow often find tampons uncomfortable. If the tampon doesn't fill with enough blood, removing it is often painful. Where is my cervix?
The cervix sits differently in every menstruating person. On top of that, its position varies during your period. A cup that's too small can slip up or down, while one that's too big can cause pressure and pain. To find out where your cervix sits, you can do the following:
- Sit on a comfortable chair or the toilet and tilt your pelvis slightly forward.
- Insert your index or middle finger into your vagina until you can feel your cervix.
- With your other hand, mark the vaginal opening on the inserted finger.
- Then measure the length from the vaginal opening to your fingertip.

How strong are my pelvic floor muscles?
If you're particularly fit and haven't given birth vaginally, your pelvic floor muscles are probably on the stronger side. And if you already use a menstrual cup but experience the occasional leak, it may be a sign that your cup is too soft.
