What does the colour of your period mean?
Period blood can come in a range of colours, from bright red to almost black. The colour of your period can vary depending on your oestrogen level – the most important sex hormone in people who menstruate, which controls the cycle. Here you'll find out what the colour says about your health.
Why does the colour of your period change?
Changes in the colour of your menstrual blood are completely normal and can happen – they're no cause for concern in themselves. Period blood often changes colour over the course of your cycle. While it tends to be darker at the beginning, it becomes lighter towards the end. Black blood may look alarming, but it's usually harmless. It most commonly appears at the start or end of your period.

How much blood do you lose during your period?
We lose around 60 ml of blood per cycle, most of it in the first two days. Anything under 25 ml is considered a light period, anything over 80 ml a heavy one. Since pads, tampons and period underwear all absorb the blood, it's hard to get a precise picture of how much you actually lose in a day or over your entire period.
Fluctuations in flow are just as hard to keep track of as changes in colour or consistency. With a menstrual cup, you always have a precise overview.
