What makes period pants special is that they are reusable – and very often at that. So that you can enjoy your pants for as long as possible, we've put together everything you need to know about washing period underwear.
How is period underwear washed?
Period pants can simply go in the washing machine after wearing, together with the rest of your dark laundry. If you've bled into them heavily or don't want to wash them straight away, we recommend rinsing the pants in cold water and letting them air dry before tossing them into the laundry basket.
[Care guide]
Washing period underwear
Period pants are basically very easy to care for and don't differ much from your normal knickers. Whether you should rinse them in cold water before washing depends on how "full" the pants are. So that nothing rubs off onto your other laundry in the basket, we recommend briefly rinsing them in cold water first and then letting them air dry. Depending on whether you always want to wash your period pants straight away or collect them first, we've prepared a short guide for you.
Washing period underwear the same day
- Wash in the washing machine, together with other laundry, at 30-60 degrees. WITHOUT fabric softener/bleach/hygiene rinse. Laundry net recommended
- Leave to air dry
Collecting period underwear and washing it later
- Rinse used pants in cold water until the water runs clear
- Leave to air dry
- Place in the laundry basket
- Wash in the washing machine, together with other laundry, at 30-60 degrees. WITHOUT fabric softener/bleach/hygiene rinse. Laundry net recommended.
- Leave to air dry
If you wash your period panties together with other laundry, you can additionally protect them with a laundry net. This is especially recommended if you use a model with lace. Otherwise, zips and the like can get tangled up during the spinning of the washing machine and damage the delicate materials.
As soon as the pants have dried after the machine wash, they are ready for their next use. Please don't put the pants in the tumble dryer or iron them. The heat damages our sewn-in multi-layer technology and thereby reduces the functionality of the period underwear. How hot can I wash period underwear?
You can wash your period pants at 30 to 60 degrees. Thanks to the antibacterial layer, 30 degrees is perfectly sufficient. Lower temperatures are also kinder to the environment. There's no need to add a hygiene rinse. Just as with sportswear, you should avoid adding fabric softener or bleach and only let the pants air dry.
How often should I wash period underwear?
Our period panties last up to 100 washes; after that, the antibacterial effect and the absorbency can decline. The more gently you clean your period pants, the longer you'll enjoy them. By the way, even after washing your period underwear 100 times, the pants don't belong in the bin – you can still wear them as normal knickers.
Which detergent should I use for period pants?
Normal colour or delicates detergent is perfectly sufficient. You don't need any special cleaner. On the contrary, avoid detergents containing bleach – such as detergents for white laundry – as well as hygiene rinses and fabric softeners. Of course, you can also wash your period pants by hand only. Rinse them under running water until the water stays clear. Then take a little detergent and wash the pants through by hand once more, making sure they are free of detergent and soap residue before air drying.
Do I have to rinse out my period pants after wearing them?
There isn't always a sink nearby where you can rinse out your pants undisturbed. But that's no problem: after wearing, you can also pack them airtight – for example in a zip bag – and only wash (out) hours later. Depending on whether you wash your period underwear straight away or later, separately or together with other laundry, we recommend rinsing the pants out first. What's important, if you're only going to machine-wash your period pants on another day, is that you don't put them in the laundry basket wet – wait until they have dried completely.
How many period pants do I need?
In principle, it's the same with period underwear as with normal underwear – it's always good to have a few extra in stock. How many period pants you need depends on how heavy your period is and how often you do your laundry. On average, we lose 60 millilitres over the entire cycle, most of it in the first two days. A heavy period means losing more than 80 millilitres, and a light period less than 25 millilitres. To avoid having to wash every day, we recommend keeping at least three pairs in stock. By the way, you can save with our discount when buying several pants at once. If your period is heavier, we even recommend having 5 – 6 pants in reserve.
