Underwear for bladder weakness in women
By SELENACARE Redaktion · 6 May 2022

Losing a few drops when you sneeze, cough or exert yourself can take the joy out of everyday life over time. Yet hardly anyone talks about it, because bladder weakness is sadly still a taboo subject. What many people don't know: urinary incontinence can often be treated successfully, or at least improved. And with special underwear for bladder weakness, you can regain a real sense of quality of life.
The difference between bladder weakness and (urinary) incontinence
While some people lose urine when coughing or lifting something heavy, others suddenly feel such a strong urge to urinate that they can no longer make it to the toilet in time. This can range from a few drops (less than 50 ml) to complete emptying of the bladder (more than 250 ml).
In everyday language, no distinction is usually made between bladder weakness and incontinence. While bladder weakness is often used as a synonym for losing a few drops, most people associate incontinence with complete emptying of the bladder.
Who is affected by bladder weakness?
Bladder weakness is by no means an issue that only affects older women. Women are most frequently affected during hormonal changes and pregnancy, as well as after a vaginal birth. Bladder weakness is also seen more often after an infection or with weak pelvic floor muscles.
On average, it affects one in three women. Because of their shorter urethra, women struggle with bladder weakness more often than men.
Incontinence underwear for women
Incontinence briefs are normal knickers with an integrated absorbent area. The absorbent layer is already sewn in. So unlike with pads or liners, nothing is inserted into incontinence underwear – the protection is built right in.
Sustainable thanks to reuse
Incontinence briefs are a sustainable hygiene product for bladder weakness because, unlike disposable products, they don't create new waste every day but can be reused for several years. SELENACARE underwear for bladder weakness is recommended for all women dealing with light bladder weakness. The briefs aren't just practical, they're also very comfortable to wear.

How does incontinence underwear work?
At the heart of our underwear is our self-developed and patented SELENAtec® multi-layer technology. Because it is not only very thin but also highly absorbent, it always gives you a dry, fresh feeling.
The functional layer (SELENAtec®) of our incontinence briefs consists of six layers:
- First layer: Moisture is passed on immediately and directly into the next layers.
- Second and third layers: The urine is safely absorbed, so the briefs always feel dry and fresh. The antibacterial protection prevents the growth of bacteria and unpleasant odours.
- Fourth layer: The especially absorbent extra protection inside the briefs locks the moisture safely away.
- Fifth layer: The leak-proof protective membrane makes sure nothing can get past it, while remaining highly breathable to prevent sweating.
- Sixth layer: The skin-friendly fabric feels no different from ordinary underwear.
Is incontinence underwear hygienic?
Yes, it is – because unlike with normal underwear, the urine is safely absorbed and there is no feeling of moisture on your skin.
Our incontinence briefs for women can absorb up to 40 ml of urine. The briefs don't release any moisture to the outside that could come into contact with your clothing. What's more, the antibacterial layer prevents unpleasant odours from forming and you always have a feeling of freshly washed underwear. Of course, you should wash your used incontinence briefs. That's easily done in the washing machine at 30°.
How long can I wear incontinence underwear at a time?
Our incontinence briefs can easily absorb 40 ml of urine – that's roughly 8 teaspoons. As soon as the briefs feel damp, it's time to change them. How often that happens depends on the degree of your bladder weakness. As with normal underwear, however, incontinence briefs should be changed at least once a day.
By the way: Thanks to the amount of liquid our briefs can absorb, they're also perfect for your period (for example on heavy days). If you'd like to find out more about our period underwear, we recommend our guide article 8 benefits of period underwear.
How many incontinence briefs do I need?
That depends entirely on how often you do your laundry. Since you can easily wash your incontinence briefs together with the rest of your dark laundry, they don't need any special treatment. If you have light bladder weakness, you should allow for 1 to 2 briefs a day. So that you don't have to do the washing every day, we recommend keeping around 5 to 7 briefs in reserve. You can also use the number of briefs you usually keep in your wardrobe as a guide.
