Understanding Your Cycle and Living Mindfully
By SELENACARE Redaktion · 3 November 2023

Your menstrual cycle is more than just a biological function – it plays a crucial role in your physical and emotional wellbeing. The hormonal changes affect not only your cycle but also your mood, your energy levels and your behaviour. The good news: you are not helplessly at the mercy of these effects. You can consciously use these cyclical changes to your advantage. Your cycle is divided into different phases, from menstruation to the phase before the next cycle begins. Each phase is characterised by different qualities that you may have already noticed. In this article we'll take a closer look at how these phases affect you and how you can use these insights to shape your everyday life more consciously and adapt activities to your cycle.
The four phases of your menstrual cycle in focus
Your menstrual cycle follows a pattern divided into four main phases: the menstrual phase, the follicular phase, the ovulation phase and the luteal phase. Each of these phases is marked by specific changes in your body that are closely linked to the fluctuations of your hormones. During the menstrual phase, the cycle begins with the shedding of the uterine lining. In the follicular phase, which follows immediately afterwards, the hormone oestrogen rises, which can lead to a feeling of energy and creativity. Then comes the ovulation phase, when an egg is released and fertility is at its highest. During this time you may feel particularly social and communicative. Finally, during the luteal phase, progesterone rises and prepares the body for a possible pregnancy. In this phase you may tend more towards rest and reflection. The differences between these phases bring different energies and needs with them – recognising them is worthwhile so you can align your activities and decisions with your cycle.
Experiencing the menstrual phase consciously
The menstrual phase marks the beginning of your cycle and brings a time of inner retreat and renewal. During this phase it's especially important to listen to your body's signals and give it the rest and care it needs. Hormones are at their lowest point during your period. This low hormonal influence lends itself to reflection and self-care. It's therefore advisable to consciously focus on relaxation and regeneration. Recommended activities include gentle stretching, yoga, walks or slow jogging – if it feels good for you. By using this time consciously, you can gently support yourself through a phase that is often experienced as draining, and gather new energy for the phases ahead.
Shaping the follicular phase actively
During the follicular phase you experience a noticeable increase in oestrogen, which has a positive effect on your mood and energy. The phase begins as your period ends. Some women, however, notice their energy levels rising again even during their period. The rise in oestrogen not only boosts your energy but also strengthens your ability to communicate and express yourself creatively. Use this phase to develop new ideas, tackle projects or enjoy physical activities like dancing or cardio training. Social interactions can also be particularly rewarding, as you usually feel more open and sociable now. Your heightened creativity and energy make the follicular phase an ideal time to get things going.
Making conscious use of the ovulation phase
During the ovulation phase, oestrogen reaches its peak, which leads to a heightened sense of self-confidence. If you observe your body's signs – cervical mucus or cervix – you'll recognise approaching ovulation by a soft, open and high cervix and by rather moist, fluid to clear or stretchy cervical mucus. This phase brings the opportunity to show yourself to the world. Your ability to communicate is particularly strong during this time, making it the perfect opportunity to network, negotiate or give presentations. Intense workouts tend to come easier, as you feel physically strong and energetic.

Shaping the luteal phase mindfully
With the onset of the progesterone phase, the luteal phase begins, which can be accompanied by possible emotional changes. The best way to recognise the luteal phase is by measuring your basal body temperature. The luteal phase begins when your basal temperature rises into its higher range. If you don't measure your temperature, the luteal phase is roughly the 12–16 days before your next period. During this time, special attention to your needs is called for. Recommended activities are those aimed at inner reflection and preparing for rest. Tidying up and planning are activities that come naturally to many in this phase of the cycle. Dial your exercise back to a moderate level and bring more yoga or relaxation exercises into your daily routine. By consciously making this time calmer and paying attention to your needs, you can start the new cycle relaxed.
Mindfulness in harmony with your cycle
While the menstrual cycle follows a rhythm, it's important to acknowledge that individual variations exist. Your body can respond differently from month to month, and it's completely fine to adapt to that. Adjusting activities according to how you feel in the moment allows you to get the best out of each phase. Pay attention to your body's signals and be mindful of your own needs and limits. Your menstrual cycle can offer you a valuable opportunity to develop more self-awareness and self-care by noticing and responding to your inner rhythms. Encourage yourself to stay mindful as you move through the different phases.GREAT. The most comfortable alternative to tampons I've tested so far. "
