The Right Period Underwear for a Heavy Flow
By SELENACARE Redaktion · 31 March 2022
Do I have a heavy period?

A heavy flow during your period is usually one thing above all: exhausting! Constantly changing pads and/or tampons, always accompanied by the fear that something might go astray after all. Here you'll find out why period underwear makes everyday life easier when you have a heavy flow, while also producing less waste and saving you money on top. We'd also like to tell you which menstrual cup is suitable for a heavy period and what to bear in mind.
How heavy is my period?
Menstruators often judge how heavy their period is by how frequently they change pads and tampons. But how much blood they really lose is only an estimate, since the blood is absorbed and therefore can't be measured. It's different with a menstrual cup, which collects the blood.
When is a period considered heavy?
The average menstrual flow is 60 millilitres, but only from 80 millilitres of blood loss onwards is a period considered heavy. We lose most of it during the first two days of our period.
Why is my period suddenly heavier?
On average, we have our period over a span of 38 years – that's around 500 times, each time with 3 to 5 days of emotional ups and downs. It's also clear that cycle irregularities can happen from time to time and aren't necessarily a cause for concern. However, if your period is heavier than usual over several cycles, or you have other complaints, you should get examined by a doctor. Because alongside hormonal fluctuations, cysts, endometriosis, inflammation or conditions of the heart, kidneys, liver or thyroid could also be the reason for heavy bleeding.
Does the heaviness of your period affect your ability to get pregnant?
Can someone with a heavy period get pregnant more easily than someone with a light flow? We couldn't find out why this misconception is so widespread, but it stubbornly persists. To answer the question: no, the heaviness of your period has no influence on your fertility or your ability to get pregnant. What matters here is that you ovulate regularly. We explain how to calculate this here: “When is ovulation?” and “Cycle calculator”.
Which period pants for a heavy flow?
Which period underwear should I wear with a heavy flow?
All our SELENACARE period pants are designed for the light to medium days of your period. The pants can absorb up to 25 millilitres of blood. But that doesn't mean you can't use them with a heavy flow – quite the opposite. For extra protection on heavy days, we recommend using a menstrual cup (or tampon) in addition to your period pants. That way you need to change your period pants less often.
Alternatively, we can recommend our bladder weakness pants, which can even absorb 40 ml of liquid. Don't worry – they're just as comfortable to wear as our period underwear or your regular underwear. You'll also find our specially developed period underwear for heavy days in our online shop. You can read exactly which materials our period pants are made of in our guide “Period underwear materials: what our pants are made of”. Comparison of fluid absorption: tampon, pad, menstrual cup, period underwear
| Hygiene product | Fluid absorption |
|---|---|
| Tampon | 5 - 15 ml |
| Disposable pad | 5 - 10 ml |
| Menstrual cup | 21 - 33 ml |
| Period underwear | 25 ml |
How much period underwear do I need for a heavy flow?
A pair of period pants can absorb 25 ml. Depending on how heavy your period is, with a heavy flow you'll probably need 2 to 3 pairs per day – unless you also use a menstrual cup. If you don't want to do laundry every day, it's worth having a few extra pairs in reserve. On average, 5 to 6 pairs of period pants will see you comfortably through your period. With a heavy flow, we recommend another 3 to 4 pairs on top – so around 8 to 10 pairs.
Zero Waste period
Driven by the idea of sustainability, it was a matter close to our hearts to make periods and bladder weakness more comfortable and, at the same time, more sustainable. With careful care, the underwear offers reliable protection for up to 100 wash cycles, after which its performance may decline slightly. But you can still wear the pants as regular underwear after that. So, what are you waiting for? Have your own experience with period underwear – we're sure you'll feel comfortable.
