Which menstrual cup do I need?
If you're thinking about buying a menstrual cup, you're probably asking yourself: “Which menstrual cup do I need?” or, more precisely, “Which menstrual cup size do I need?”.
Since every body is different, we offer our SELENACARE menstrual cups in three different sizes and two firmness levels. Our questionnaire will help you determine the right menstrual cup size for you.
If you're not sure about some of the questions, don't worry. It's about finding the right tendency, not about perfection. Take a few minutes, because the right size is essential for a comfortable fit, easy insertion and removal, and for preventing leaks.
Simply answer the following 5 questions and add up the points. Your score will reveal the ideal cup for you. Let's go!
Five questions to find your perfect cup size
The 5 questions: finding the right menstrual cup size
Age
Age is only a rough guideline and a first point of reference, as not every body develops and changes in the same way over a lifetime. In general, however, muscles and connective tissue become somewhat softer with age, while in young menstruators the tissue is still very firm and tight. That's why, as a rough rule, menstruators under 30 should choose a smaller size. But as we said: this is just a tendency – there are certainly people over 30 whose muscles and tissue are very firm, just as there are young menstruators who feel perfectly comfortable with a larger cup.
Question 1:
- I am younger than 30 – 0 points
- I am 30 or older – 1 point
Cervix height
Did you know that the position of your cervix changes during your period? To find out where your cervix begins, try to feel for it during your period (ideally on several days). Important: wash your hands thoroughly first.
If you can feel your cervix with your finger, it sits low and a small cup is right for you. If you're unsure, you can of course also ask your gynaecologist.
Question 2:
- I can't reach my cervix with my fingers – 2 points
- I can easily reach my cervix with my fingers – 0 points
Pelvic floor muscles
How well trained your pelvic floor is matters less for the size than for the firmness of the menstrual cup. The sportier and more active you are, the stronger your pelvic floor usually is – in that case, a firmer cup is a good choice.
Sports that engage the deep muscles in particular make for a healthy, strong pelvic floor – above all Pilates and yoga. If you prefer to take it easy on the sofa, your pelvic floor is probably not all that firm.
Question 3:
- I exercise regularly – 0 points
- Sport isn't really my thing – 1 point
Pregnancy
If you have already given birth vaginally, a larger cup is a very good fit for you, as the surrounding tissue was stretched considerably during the birth. A caesarean section, by contrast, is not an indication for a large menstrual cup.
Question 4:
- I have given birth vaginally – 2 points
- My child was born by caesarean section – 0 points
- I don't have children – 0 points
Flow intensity
If you only have a light flow during your period, a small size is enough. With a heavy flow, you should go for a larger cup. If you've been using pads or tampons up to now, you have a good indication of how heavy your period is. If you've been changing almost every hour, your flow is on the heavier side.
But bear in mind – a larger cup is also longer and could touch your cervix. So test beforehand whether M or L fits you better. If, based on the other factors, the smaller cup suits your body better after all, you simply need to empty it more often.
Our SELENACARE menstrual cups come in different lengths and capacities:
S: 58 mm long; 21 ml capacity
M: 62 mm long; 26 ml capacity
L: 67 mm long; 33 ml capacity
Question 5:
- I have a very heavy period – 1 point
- My period is very light to normal – 0 points
