Discharge in Pregnancy, Yellow Discharge & Blood Clots: What’s Normal?
By SELENACARE Redaktion · 30 September 2026
Changes in vaginal discharge make many women feel unsure – especially during pregnancy or on the heavier days of their period. Whether it’s suddenly increased discharge in pregnancy, an unusual colour such as yellow discharge, or jelly-like blood clots: your body uses your intimate area as an important signalling and protective system.
Below, we take you step by step through what these signals mean, when you can stay relaxed and how to make everyday life easier for yourself.
Why increased discharge in pregnancy is usually a good sign
Increased vaginal secretion (leukorrhoea) is one of the first noticeable changes in pregnancy. Due to increased oestrogen production and better blood flow to the pelvic area, the cervical glands produce more fluid. This thin to creamy, odourless and usually milky-white discharge in pregnancy has an important protective function: it continuously flushes pathogens out of the vagina, helping to protect mother and baby from infection.
"A pregnant woman’s body is working flat out to protect the unborn baby. Increased, milky discharge acts as a natural barrier against ascending infections and, from a medical point of view, is in the vast majority of cases a sign that the protective function of the vaginal flora is intact."
When yellow discharge is harmless – and when it’s worth getting it checked
When discharge turns slightly yellowish, it often causes concern. But yellow discharge is not automatically a reason to panic:
- Harmless: Slightly yellowish discharge is often simply the result of normal white discharge drying in the air (oxidation).
- Needs checking: If the discharge turns intensely yellow or greenish, is crumbly or smells unpleasant, or if itching and burning occur, it may be a bacterial or yeast infection. During pregnancy, this should always be checked by a gynaecologist to avoid complications.
What clots are and how to interpret them during your period or pregnancy
Clots are thickened, often jelly-like lumps of blood. They form when blood stays in the uterus a little longer and the body’s own clotting factors kick in.
- During your period: On particularly heavy days, small clots in menstrual blood are completely normal and a sign that your body is swiftly clearing out the shed uterine lining.
- During pregnancy: If bleeding with clots occurs during pregnancy, always err on the side of caution. Make an appointment with your doctor or hospital straight away to reliably clarify the cause.
How to feel dry and comfortable every day
Whether it’s pregnancy-related discharge or damp days in your cycle: disposable panty liners with plastic films can quickly irritate the intimate area and encourage a warm, moist environment. Breathable, washable pads and panty liners made from soft textiles, on the other hand, reliably absorb moisture. They are gentle on your sensitive skin flora and keep you feeling soft, dry and secure through every day.
