What does brown discharge mean?
Discharge is a completely natural part of the cycle. It consists of cervical mucus, shed cells and fluid, and protects the vagina by cleansing it and keeping the vaginal environment in balance. Its colour and consistency can change over the course of the cycle – sometimes it's clear and stretchy, sometimes whitish and creamy.
If brown or dark brown discharge occurs, in most cases it's because old blood has mixed with normal cervical mucus. Fresh blood is red, but as soon as it clots and breaks down, it turns brownish. Brown cervical mucus is therefore usually nothing more than blood residue that your body is gradually shedding.
Typical causes of brown discharge
Brown discharge before and after your period
