Tampons and heavy metals – what does the science say?
A study by the University of California, Berkeley examined 30 tampons from 14 different manufacturers and found all 16 metals tested, including lead, arsenic and cadmium. Particularly interesting:
- Lead was detected in all tampons examined.
- Organic tampons contained higher amounts of arsenic, while non-organic products showed more lead.
- The concentrations of the metals varied depending on brand and origin.
Sounds worrying? The good news: according to experts, the amounts are so small that they probably pose no direct danger to health. An Öko-Test analysis found, for example, that a person would have to use around 180 tampons in a single day to absorb a critical amount of antimony.
