24-Hour Menstrual Cup Test: The Big Hands-On Review
By SELENACARE Redaktion · 11 February 2022
Menstrual cup test: meet Christine

Our tester Christine is 27 years old and lives with her partner in a flat in the heart of Vienna. She works as a client advisor at a bank, cycles to work every day and goes to an exercise class twice a week. Until now, Christine has been one of those women who reach for tampons and pads during their period. And perhaps you feel the same way she does: she is no longer happy with conventional disposable period products. That makes her the perfect candidate for our 24-hour menstrual cup test.
Menstrual cup test: the report
A stress-free period
It is not just that it drives her mad when she has once again forgotten to stock up in time (we all know exactly how it feels to have to go round asking for tampons at work or at school…). Even worse are the mountains of waste we produce with them over the course of our lives.
A sustainable alternative to tampons and pads
At a dinner they cooked together, Christine's best friend told her all about her new menstrual cup, full of enthusiasm. She, too, found all the waste produced by conventional disposables really bothersome. When she finally told Christine that she even goes swimming with it, Christine was curious and had to try it for herself. Read on to find out how Christine experienced her first 24 hours and what her verdict on the period cup is.

Which menstrual cup size fits?
Getting the right size of period cup is, of course, one of the most important requirements for a smooth switch to a period cup. To find out, Christine filled in our questionnaire: "How do I find the right menstrual cup size?"
It quickly became clear that the SELENACARE Premium menstrual cup in size S was the best choice.
Good to know: Testing your menstrual cup when you are not on your period is not such a good idea. During your period, the cervix usually sits lower than at other times. The cup could therefore slip up too high if you insert it at a time of the month when you are not menstruating, and it could then be difficult to remove.
The first time: inserting and removing the menstrual cup
When Christine's next period started, she was a little nervous about using a menstrual cup for the first time. Christine had read up on everything about inserting and removing her new cup in our guide on inserting a menstrual cup and the best folding techniques.
Tip: Have a look at our videos. Together with Erdbeerwoche we have filmed various tutorials – from folding the menstrual cup to inserting it and, of course, removing it.
Well informed, Christine begins practising in a relaxed atmosphere. She describes inserting the cup for the first time as "unfamiliar", but after just a few attempts she had "got the knack of it" and found that the size she had chosen was a very good fit.
"At first I thought folding the menstrual cup was bound to be really complicated. But it is much softer than I had assumed. Once I had found the right technique and got used to the process after inserting it once or twice, it was surprisingly easy! I then left the period cup in overnight straight away and I have to say I am genuinely thrilled! No blood stains on the sheets! And I slept really well, because unlike with tampons I did not have to get up in the middle of the night to change. Brilliant!"
Really comfortable: you cannot feel the menstrual cup at all
After that relaxed night, Christine continues her menstrual cup test the next morning. After emptying and quickly rinsing the period cup, she inserts it again and cycles to work.
"After the positive experience during the night, I was far less worried that something might leak."
Because the menstrual cup sits correctly, Christine cannot feel it at all while she is at work.
"I almost forgot I was on my period. I did not have any of that unpleasant feeling of pressure I knew from tampons." What impressed Christine most was how long the cup can be worn: "I barely had to empty the period cup during my entire working day. That was genuinely relaxing. Only before heading home did I go to the toilet and empty it."
Inserting and removing the cup is now noticeably easier for Christine. She is slowly getting the hang of how to fold her menstrual cup.
No problem: doing sport with a menstrual cup
Christine goes to an aerobics class twice a week and was very curious to see how exercising with a menstrual cup would go. To her surprise, she did not notice the period cup at all during sport either.
"I have to admit that I did nip to the toilet once during the class to check that everything really was fine and nothing was leaking. After all, aerobics gets you moving quite a bit – it is completely different from sitting in the office. But to my great relief – and, I must honestly confess, my surprise – everything was fine and all the blood had stayed in the period cup."
Christine's friend had also told her that you can even go swimming with a menstrual cup.
